I'm really sure what it is about this piece that captures my eye. The pearl eyes are stunning along with the teeth and the attention to detail in the tail is remarkable. I find it hard to believe that it was just a tobacco pipe. I would think they used it in cermonial situations that called for something a little stronger than tobacco.
If not tobacco... then what? I wonder if they consumed other substances. :)
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting how part of it is three dimensional and then it flows into a two dimensional surface with the tail and feet only a texture on the pipe. Also the combination of other elements give it a unique personality.
ReplyDeleteI find the expression of the beaver in this piece to be somewhat unnerving. If one were to use this pipe (regardless of the substance one decided to use within it) it looks like the beaver is about to attack. It has this mischievous sort of look on its face and as your taking your breath the beavers mouth is probably very nearly touching your nose.
